Where the Smell Actually Comes From
Chemical odor in storage bags is not one problem. It’s four. Understanding which one affects your product tells you exactly what to change in your next production run.
Here’s the uncomfortable truth: the smell is baked in at the factory, not during shipping. Storage bags don’t absorb odor in a container. The odor is released FROM the materials used to make them. By the time the bag reaches your customer, it has been off-gassing for 45+ days in a sealed shipping container. The smell is concentrated, not fresh.
The 4 Odor Sources in Storage Bags
Source 1: PVC Coating and Lamination
The #1 culprit. Most cheap storage bags use PVC (polyvinyl chloride) coating on the back of the fabric to make it waterproof. PVC contains plasticizers — specifically phthalates — that off-gas continuously for weeks after production.
How to identify it: Flip the bag inside out. If the back of the fabric has a shiny, plastic-like coating that feels slightly sticky, it’s PVC.
The fix: Ask for PU (polyurethane) coating or acrylic coating instead. Both are odor-free and waterproof. Source 2: Low-Grade Dye Fixatives
Fabric dyeing uses chemical fixatives to bond color to fiber. Cheap dye houses use formaldehyde-based fixatives because they’re 40% cheaper than the alternatives. Formaldehyde off-gasses for weeks and has a distinctive “new carpet” smell that consumers immediately associate with chemicals.
How to identify it: The smell is sharp, slightly sweet, and irritates the throat. It’s the same smell as new shoes or new carpet.
The fix: Specify OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified fabrics in your purchase order. OEKO-TEX certification explicitly tests for formaldehyde and 100+ other harmful substances. Your supplier can source certified fabric from any major mill — they just need to know you require it.
Source 3: Adhesive in Lined Bags
Bags with PEVA lining, aluminum foil insulation, or multi-layer construction use adhesive to bond layers. Cheap adhesives contain VOCs (volatile organic compounds) that off-gas at room temperature.

How to identify it: The smell is strongest inside the bag (where the lining is) and weakens when the bag is fully open and aired out.
The fix: Ask for solvent-free, water-based adhesives or heat-bonded lamination (no adhesive at all). Heat-bonded lamination costs 10-15% more but produces zero VOC off-gassing.
Source 4: Printing Ink and Logo Application
Screen printing and heat transfer use solvent-based inks. On dark or saturated color fabrics, factories use thicker ink layers to achieve opacity — which means more solvent residue.
How to identify it: The smell is concentrated near the printed logo area. Rub the logo with a dry finger — if it transfers any residue or smell, the ink hasn’t fully cured.
The fix: Specify cured, low-VOC water-based inks or sublimation printing (for polyester fabrics). Ensure the factory allows 24-48 hours of curing time before packing — not the “pack immediately” approach used to save floor space.
Why Most Factories Won’t Fix It
Here’s what I’ve seen across hundreds of factory audits in China:
The cost gap is tiny. The motivation gap is huge.

So they keep using the cheap materials because nobody has asked them to change.
This is a communication gap, not a quality gap. The factory can absolutely make odor-free bags. They just need the buyer to specify it.
What to Ask Your Supplier
Add these 5 lines to your next purchase order or supplier questionnaire:
“Fabric coating: PU or acrylic. No PVC.” This eliminates the #1 odor source. Cost impact: +$0.03-0.08/yard.
“Dye fixative: OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified. Formaldehyde-free.” This eliminates the #2 odor source. Cost impact: +$0.08/yard.

“Pre-shipment: 48-hour ventilation before packing into cartons.” This ensures residual off-gassing happens at the factory, not in your customer’s living room. Cost impact: factory floor space — which any organized factory can manage.
If your supplier says “we can’t do that” or “it will cost too much,” they’re either a trading company that doesn’t control the factory, or a factory that doesn’t want to change. Both are signals to find a better supplier.
