How to Put a Christmas Tree in a Storage Bag: Pro Step-by-Step Guide for No-Fuss Packing

Gray upright Christmas tree storage cover

In This Article

To put an artificial Christmas tree in a storage bag, remove its decorations, disconnect power and follow the tree maker’s disassembly instructions. Fold each section only as its construction allows, arrange the sections in a suitable bag, and close the zipper without forcing it. An upright storage system may use a different procedure.

Check the packed tree size before choosing the bag

The assembled height of a tree does not tell you the dimensions of its longest packed section. Two trees of the same height can have different branch density and section lengths.

  • Measure the longest section after folding it as the maker permits.
  • Check the width and depth of the arranged sections, including any accessories that will share the bag.
  • Compare these measurements with the bag’s usable interior and opening. Ask whether a listed size is an external measurement.
  • Try closing the bag around the actual load. The zipper should not have to pull protruding branches or overloaded sides together.

Prepare the tree and storage area

Remove ornaments and other detachable decorations. Disconnect power before separating a pre-lit tree, and follow its instructions for electrical connectors. Keep small fittings together in a labeled pouch. Clean and dry the tree as directed before packing; a fixed waiting time does not establish that it is dry.

Make space to lay out the bag and tree sections. Inspect the fabric, zipper, handles and any straps for damage. Protect exposed pole ends using the tree maker’s supplied caps or recommended method.

Pack a standard bag in five steps

  1. Open the bag fully. Place it on a clear, flat surface with its opening accessible.
  2. Fold the sections carefully. Follow the direction allowed by the hinges or branch construction. If the maker permits ties, use them to hold the sections together without crushing foliage or trapping wiring.
  3. Arrange the sections. Put them in a stable position that fits the bag’s shape. Keep exposed pole ends, branches and connectors away from the zipper path. Store the stand separately if it does not fit safely.
  4. Use the supplied restraints as instructed. Straps should secure the load; they should not be used to force an oversized tree into the bag.
  5. Close and check. Stop if the zipper resists. Reposition the contents or use a suitable larger bag instead of pulling harder. Follow the stated handling and load instructions when moving it.

Upright bags and rolling bags need different checks

Upright storage systems

Check the instructions for both the tree and the upright bag before removing sections or lifting it. Some systems stay around the stand and pull upward; others use a separate cover. Do not assume that every upright bag should be pulled over the top or that its fabric handles are rated to lift the whole tree.

Rolling storage bags

Confirm the loading direction, load limit and restraint arrangement for that model. Keep the load stable and close the bag before moving it. Wheels help on suitable surfaces but do not remove the need for lifting at stairs, thresholds or other obstacles. Get help when the loaded bag is difficult to control.

If the tree will not fit

Check whether it has been separated into the sections intended by its maker, whether branches are folded correctly, and whether the stand or accessories are taking up needed space. Compare the packed dimensions again. Do not force extra disassembly, tighter branch compression or a strained zipper to compensate for a bag that is too small.

Questions before storing it away

Can a pre-lit tree go into a storage bag?

Follow the tree maker’s storage instructions. Disconnect power, protect its connectors and keep wires clear of hinges, ties and zippers. Built-in lights do not make every tree suitable for tight compression.

Does a bag need to be labeled for the exact tree height?

A height label is a useful starting point, but confirm the actual packed dimensions and opening. A trial fit is more informative than height alone.

Can the storage bag be machine washed?

Check its care label. Fabric, coatings, boards, wheels and other parts can require different cleaning methods. Make sure the bag and contents are dry before storage.

For retailers planning a Christmas tree bag range

Specify the packed tree dimensions, opening, handle arrangement, straps and packaging instructions for each SKU. Ask for a sample fit check before using a tree-height claim on retail packaging. See our custom Christmas tree storage bags for configuration discussions.

For product-specific storage procedures, consult the tree or bag manual. Examples of different systems include Balsam Hill’s storage guidance and Santa’s Bags’ upright-system instructions; their instructions apply to their respective products.
